GARNIER (Robert). - Lot 80
GARNIER (Robert). Ɵ The Tragedies. Nouvellement reveues & corrigées. Paris, Mamert Patisson, 1580. 2 parts in one volume in-12, red morocco, jansenist, interior lace, gilt edges on marbling (Chambolle-Duru). First collective edition, gathering the 5 plays of the author published until then (Porcie, Hippolyte, Cornélie, Marc-Antoine and La Troade), as well as the tragedy Antigone ou La Piété, published some time before, here printed in separate pagination with a particular title page. Nice printing in italic type by Mamert Patisson, the author's regular printer. Originally from Maine, friend of Ronsard, Robert Garnier (circa 1545-1590) was greatly inspired by the great ancient dramatic authors. By his lyricism and the poetic quality of his tragedies, he imposed himself, alongside Étienne Jodelle, as one of the greatest dramatists of the French Renaissance. Let us quote in this edition 4 pieces of Ronsard, of which a sonnet in praise of the author: Par toy, Garnier, le Scene des François se change en or. We also find a sonnet addressed to the tragedian by Nicolas de Ronsard (f. C12 v°), a distant cousin of the Vendôme, "quite a talented rhymer" but also an "awful scoundrel and murderer, condemned to death and executed in effigy in February 1574" (see J. P. Barbier-Mueller, IV-2, p. 277). Beautiful copy in morocco by Chambolle-Duru. It belonged to the libraries of Charles Pelliot and Jules Lemaître (bookplate). Not listed in his 1917 catalog. One corner dulled. Renouard, p. 182. - N. Ducimetière, Mignonne..., n°58, note 1. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°367-368.
