Procession of Deer. China, (3rd-1st century BC) - Lot 111
Procession of Deer. China, (3rd-1st century BC) 57 x 10 cm. Wool tapestry This textile presents a procession of four highly stylized deer in bright colors (ochre, mauve, brown, gray, carmine, pink on a green background). This type of representation is directly linked to Scythian metal productions of the same period. Comparable tapestry bands have been discovered in the Shanpula tombs, on the southern edge of the Taklamakan desert in Xinjiang, China. The same composition is found on at least two known skirts, one in the collection of the Abegg-Stiftung foundation in Switzerland and the other in the Fine Art Museum in San Francisco. Provenance: Parisian collection acquired in the 1990s.
