Deer, dress sleeve. Sogdiana, Central Asia,... - Lot 113 - Giquello
Deer, dress sleeve. Sogdiana, Central Asia, c. 8th century 49.5 x 37.5 cm. Silk weaving Provenance: Parisian collection acquired in the 1990s. A very finely woven silk brocade representing deer. Woven in red, cream, green and blue. The deer are inscribed in medallions bordered by roundels. The registers of deer are interspersed by stylized palmettes. Probably the most colorful and best known textiles of the region. They were woven by Sogdian artisans, a people of Persian origin who lived on the silk route. Their textile productions were the most prized by the dignitaries of Central Asia and China during the Tang period (618-907). These textiles sometimes reached Europe, where they were always appreciated by the high clergy and the European aristocracy. The treasures of the great abbeys sometimes still contain them.
