The Coronation of the Virgin in lime or poplar... - Lot 14 - Giquello
The Coronation of the Virgin in lime or poplar wood, carved, polychromed and gilded, hollowed out back. Mary and Christ are seated on a molded bench; the latter places a crown on the head of his Mother wearing a veil forming a mantle; hair treated in stylized waves; the robes and mantles bear the remains of a rich decoration of various motifs, almonds, fleurons, circles, crosses... Lake Constance, around 1330 Height: 53 cm - Width: 37,5 cm (wormholes) The theme of the Coronation of the Virgin was very often interpreted in the 14th century in the Middle Rhine region, in Cologne and its surroundings. However, this subject is also found further south, in the Tyrol and in the region of Lake Constance (Bodensee). This Coronation combines several characteristics that link it to the latter geographical area: the nature of its wood, which is neither the oak nor the walnut used in Cologne, the schematization of the hair and beard and the ornamental richness of the clothes. Provenance: Private collection, Lombardy Works consulted: W. Stähle, Schwäbische Bildschnitzkunst I, Rottweil 1983, cat.1. H. Westhoff, Die mittelalterlichen Skulpturen, volume I, Stuttgart, 1989.
