Amazing pewter ewer. The decagonal body rises... - Lot 55 - Giquello
Amazing pewter ewer. The decagonal body rises on a pedestal on a circular base. It has a curious handle with an escutcheon engraved with a pair of scissors and the initials M J B on the front, and an open-sided spout on the top. A frieze engraved with tremblé runs along the top of the vase, surmounted by a sort of notched crown decorated with pearls. Thick cast iron, contrary to what one might think, the body is not worked in repoussé, but cast. It may be a corporate object (tailors?). Germany, or central Europe, second half of the 16th century. Height : 21,8 cm (an oxidation at the base of the vase. Base of the pedestal deformed, perhaps missing a molding) We have not found any equivalent object in the specialized literature, only a goblet of a guild of masons of Wismar, dated 1500, presents a shape with sides that can be compared to our ewer (Mory, L., Schönes Zinn, ill. 23).
