Plate in silver plated repoussé iron with... - Lot 70 - Giquello
Plate in silver plated repoussé iron with gilding representing Marie de Médicis (1575-1642) in a straight profile bust. The wife of Henri IV is in court dress, wearing a very large tuyauté collar decorated with rich lace, her hair up, curled around the temples, held back by a diadem; earrings and a pearl necklace as well as a brooch with a cross hanging from it reinforce the luxurious aspect of this portrait of a middle-aged woman. Paris, workshop of Guillaume Dupré (Sissone, circa 1576 - Paris, 1643), first quarter of the 17th century Height: 17,5 cm - Width: 14,3 cm Framed Provenance: Former private collection, Switzerland This portrait of Marie de Medici was made after a model by Guillaume Dupré, known by the medal signed by the famous sculptor and dated 1624, a copy of which is kept in the Louvre (inv.OA 786, fig.). This is a portrait of the sovereign in her full maturity, close to sixty years of age. Guillaume Dupré, during his long career, became first sculptor to King Henry IV in 1611, following Barthélémy Prieur, whose son-in-law he was. In the service of this sovereign and his successors, he was the great medallist of the kings and the court until the very beginning of the reign of Louis XIV.
