Rare fragment of wallpaper with revolutionary attributes. - Lot 116
Rare fragment of wallpaper with revolutionary attributes. It lined the walls of the meeting room of the Committee of Public Safety (Tuileries) or those of the Revolutionary Court. Gouache on rag paper, in several glued pieces, decorated with lictor beams, pikes, Phrygian caps, cockades and tricolor ribbons, laurel wreaths and mottos in tricolor ribbons "Soyons unis, nous serons invincibles". Framed. Maison Réveillon, former royal wallpaper factory, circa 1793. H. 68 x W. 37 cm (when viewed). Related works: Several fragments of this paper are known to have passed through sales or are held in public institutions. Some suggest that it was made for the Paris Revolutionary Court, while others, such as the BnF, place it more likely in the meeting room of the Comité de Salut public. Located in the Tuileries Palace, which became the National Palace, the Committee of Public Salvation, created on April 6, 1793 by the Convention, occupied the Small Gallery located between the "Pavillon de l'Unité", where the National Archives were located, and the "Pavillon de l'Égalité" (respectively, former Pavillon de l'Horloge and Pavillon de Flore). See : - Piasa sale, May 23, 2005, lot 73. - Osenat sale, July 7, 2019, lot 192. - Musée Carnavalet, inv. PP1, with this note: "This paper was laid in 1790 at the Duc de Mortemart, 88 rue de l'Isle. It came from the house of Réveillon's wallpapers". - Archives Nationales, AE/II/3769.
