Sylva BERNT (1910-1995)
Ancient navigation, circa 1957 Bas-relief in carved stone composed of six elements (one tile restored). Signed lower left. 279 x 200 cm Provenance : Private mansion in Neuilly-sur-Seine entirely decorated by André Arbus; Galerie Marie Watteau, Paris. Bibliography : Ensembles mobiliers - 1957, Volume 17, Bibliothèque de l'Image, Paris, 2005, our bas-relief reproduced plate 37 in an interior by André Arbus. History : The Italian sculptor Sylva Bernt responded to her first French commissions from 1952, following her meeting with André Arbus at the painter Guido Cadorin in Venice. At the invitation of the decorator, she participated in the construction of the liner Bretagne by making a large stone altar for the chapel of the ship. This first collaboration marked the beginning of a close and fruitful relationship between the two artists. Sylva Bernt installs her workshop avenue du Maine in Paris and, while continuing her personal work, becomes the practitioner of Arbus for whom she executes decorative elements that he incorporates in his creations movable. They participate in joint projects, whether large official orders such as the decoration of transatlantic ships the Viêt Nam (1952) and the Pasteur (1961), or of a private nature such as the construction of the villa of Jean-Marie Terrin in Aix-en-Provence (1955). She is distinguished by the realization of monumental panels in pink stone of Chassagne, with decorations generally inspired by ancient myths and treated in the manner of neo-Assyrian bas-reliefs. In 1955, she designed a long frieze for the Grand Salon of the Palais des Consuls of the Rouen Chamber of Commerce, retracing the Viking epic. She deploys a nautical ornamental repertoire that is dear to her by representing scenes of boat building and sailing and rowing, which are similar to those of our bas-relief that adorned the residence of a private mansion in Neuilly.
