ALBARET (le chevalier d').
Différens projets relatifs au climat et à la manière la plus convenable de bâtir dans les pays chauds, et plus particulièrement dans les Indes Occidentales. S.l.n.n., 1776. In-folio, marbled calf, filets and cold rolls, smooth spine decorated with gilt filets, red title page (Binding of the period). First edition of this rare work containing various projects of colonial architecture in America, decorated with 20 plates engraved on copper by Poulleau. After the conquest of the West Indies, the Europeans, while settling there, did not consult enough the nature of the climate; & not finding models in the country which could guide them in their way of building, followed only their national customs to build houses: from there resulted a number of inconveniences caused by earthquakes, hurricanes, heavy rains & great heats: it is this observation which decided the author, an architect in Paris, to draw plans of buildings better adapted to the tropical climate. None of the buildings proposed by the architect seem to have been built. Among them are a project for "fortified" houses and a governor's residence. A facsimile edition was published in 1967. Soiling to a few plates. Restoration in the margin of plate #19, plate #20 foxed. Lining and endpapers renewed. Old pen marks on the title which has a restored median tear (not missing).
