MANUSCRIT - Book of Hours (for use in Rome) In... - Lot 160 - Giquello
MANUSCRIT - Book of Hours (for use in Rome) In Latin, illuminated manuscript on parchment Belgium, probably Bruges, around 1470-1480 With 2 large miniatures and 8 historiated initials by a Flemish artist [that of the Zouche Hours, London, Victoria and Albert Museum, MSL/1984/29] 72 ff, preceded by a parchment endpaper, lacunar manuscript (collation: i2 (of 8 ?), ii6 (of 8 ?), iii8, iv9 (8+1), v8, vi8, vii9 (8+1), viii8, ix8, x4), missing several leaves if one follows the foliotation (relatively recent, upper right corner), allowing to say that the leaves were removed after the writing of the bibliographical note laminated to the recto of the first endpaper (announcing 103 ff. and the presence of miniatures since removed as well as a calendar), missing several large miniatures, the two miniatures present are inserted singletons (blank recto), dark brown ink gothic script, 21 lines per page (justification: 80 x 115 mm), parchment ruled in pale red ink, headings in red, numerous small blue or burnished gold initials with red or dark blue watermarked decoration (1 line high), numerous small burnished gold initials on pink and blue backgrounds enhanced with white (2 to 4 lines high), larger initials introducing the large textual divisions in pink and blue with white highlights on burnished gold backgrounds with colored vegetal and floral decoration (4 to 5 lines high), illuminated pages and large liturgical divisions decorated with illuminated borders with acanthus leaves, scrolls, vegetals, flowers and small black dots on reserved backgrounds, with 8 historiated initials and two large miniatures (f. 23v and f. 47v). Bound in brown calf (Flemish binding? late 15th or early 16th?), decorated with cold-stamped plates [binding rubbed but three figures can be distinguished: St. Catherine (sword visible), Virgin and Child between two angels, another saint (Beard?); figures separated by indecipherable lettering], plates inscribed in a frame of foliage and foliage with 4 fleur-de-lis at the outer corners, another outer frame with small fleurons and garland, spine with 5 nerves, small label "XVth c.", engraved brass clasps depicting a nimbed cleric with hands joined in prayer (later clasps, XIXth c. ?). Some stains to the parchment. Binding rubbed. Dimensions of the binding : 135 x 200 mm ; dimensions of the leaves : 130 x 190 mm. This manuscript is to be compared with the "Zouche Hours" (London, Victoria and Albert Museum, MSL/1984/29, Hours painted in Bruges, for the island use of Sarum) which contains illuminations in a style very close to those of the present Hours. The treatment of the scene depicting the Resurrection of Lazarus may be compared with an interior representation of the miracle of Jesus (see Watson, R. Victoria and Albert Museum. Western Illuminated Manuscripts, London, 2011, vol. I, pp. 422-427: Victoria and Albert Museum, MS. MSL/1984/29, fol. 108). For the Zouche Hours, R. Watson does not identify the artist but states: "Calendar and litany have a Bruges character adapted for Sarum Use. The miniatures are in a simple style designed for rapid execution. Large areas of light green, blue, yellow, scarlet red and grey have detail added to make landscape distances, rocks, fields, brocades etc. [...] Tall haloes are in brushed gold with a black bordering gold line [...] More important figures have clumsy squre hats with ermine brims. Many male figures have small forked beards..." (Watson, 2011, vol. I, p. 427). TEXT ff. 1-2v, Extracts from the Hours of the Cross (lacunar) - ff. 3-5v, Suffrages to the saints, including John the Baptist, Peter and Paul, Nicholas, Adrian, Mary Magdalene, Margaret, Catherine, Barbara - ff. 6-30v, Hours of the Virgin, according to the usage of Rome, rubric, Incipiunt hore beate marie virginis secundum consuetudinem curie romane - ff. 31-35v, Office of the Virgin for Advent - ff. 36-46v, Psalms of penance, followed by the litanies (ff. 42-44).
