MANUSCRIT. - Voyage from France to Nouméa... - Lot 167 - Giquello
MANUSCRIT. - Voyage from France to Nouméa aboard the Havre. S.l. [1884]. Manuscript in-4 (235 x 185 mm), title and 32 pages, bradel half-percaline beige, red title on the back (Modern binding). Interesting manuscript, relation of a trip from Brest to New Caledonia. The author of this manuscript, a named E. Trotignon, sergeant of a marine infantry detachment, made the trip on board the steamer Le Havre. Numerous details on the navigation (climate, state of the sea), the incidents of the journey (breakage and repair of the rudder, breakage of a piston, quarantine in Cape Verde following the cholera epidemic which raged in Europe, etc.), the stopovers (in particular Boavista, Saint-Vincent in Cape Verde, etc.), the provisioning, etc. The manuscript is unfinished and stops at the stopover in Gabon; the last sentence, dated September 12, announces the departure at 3:30 a.m. for the Cape. The African stopover in Libreville, which lasted a few days, is the object of particular attention: the ship unloaded merchandise there and refueled itself with fresh water, oxen and coal. The author describes the French factories in Libreville, the Catholic mission, its social institutions, then goes on to describe Gabon, its climate, its wealth and trade, the character of the different peoples who inhabit the country, their physical appearance, their costumes, the headdresses and jewelry of the women, etc. The manuscript is embellished with 9 plates drawn by the author, two of which bear his signature: views of the coasts of Cape Verde, view of a street in Libreville, view of the steamer, a Gabonese village in the woods, the English factory in Glass, etc. Wet stamp in the author's name on the title page.
