MAVELOT (Charles).
New book of different Cartouches, Crowns, Helmets, Supports and Tenans. S.l., Se vend chez le dit Mavelot, s.d. [1685]. In-12 oblong, granite half-calf with small vellum corners, red morocco title-piece on the first cover, smooth spine decorated in the grotesque style (Modern binding in the old taste). Guilmard, p. 109. Engraved suite of 43 beautiful plates of heraldic ornaments, preceded by 6 plates for the title, the dedications to the Duke of Saint-Aignan and his coat of arms, plus an engraved privilege leaf dated July 9, 1685 and 31 pages of printed explanatory text. Charles Mavelot was active in the last quarter of the 17th century and was the ordinary engraver of the Duchess of Montpensier. Subjects of three plates (pl. 11, 17 and 22) skilfully retouched. Restoration of paper in the lower margin of plate 13 and restored tear without missing in plate 31.
