Journal de l'expédition des Portes de fer. Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1844. Large in-8, dark blue morocco, triple gilt fillet, large decoration of eight compartments drawn by double fillets and decorated with fleurs-de-lis or olive branches, the whole arranged around a large polylobed compartment in reserve, spine decorated with compartmentalized fleurdelisé boxes and decorated with fleur-de-lis seeds, red morocco lining decorated with a large gilt lace, fleur-de-lis in the corners in a cartouche, gilt edges (Chambolle-Duru - Marius Michel doreur). First edition, printed on vellum paper, of one of the beautiful books of the 19th century dedicated to the conquest of Algeria. 40 woodcut figures printed on chine monté, under a captioned serpente, and numerous vignettes in the text, in first edition. A folding map is placed at the end of the volume. Spectacular and perfect compartmented binding signed Chambolle-Duru; it is also signed by the gilder, Marius Michel (the father). Another copy of this edition, in a similar binding (unlined) executed by Hippolyte Duru in 1856, was in the Henri Lafond library (2015, n°130). Engraved bookplate (pasted in the middle of the lining) of Freiherr Maximilian von Goldschmied Rothschild. On verso of the title, restitution stamp of the Frankfurt library. Small restoration in the center of the upper board.
