ORDINANCE of King Charles Neufiesme now reigning,... - Lot 178 - Giquello
ORDINANCE of King Charles Neufiesme now reigning, made in his council, on the complaints, grievances & remonstrances of the deputes of the three Estates held in the city of Orleans. Leües & publiées en la Court de Parlement à Paris, le Samedy treziesme iour de Septembre 1561. Paris, for Jehan Dallier, and Maturin Breuille, at Vincent Sertenas, 1561. In-4, soft vellum of the time. Important ordinance promulgated during the reign of Charles IX, following the Estates General convened in Orleans by the queen mother and regent Catherine de Medici. It proposed a general reform of the religious, judicial, financial, economic and social life of the kingdom: compulsory residence for prelates and priests, prohibition of astrologers from predicting the future, maintenance of a tutor in the cities for the instruction of children, simplification of civil and criminal procedures, reduction of state expenses and improvement of tax collection, regulation of trades, etc. Contemporary with the Colloque de Poissy, this ordinance also represents an attempt at conciliation between Catholics and Huguenots, as it contains the first official measures of appeasement towards the supporters of the reformed religion. Wetness on the whole volume. Stained vellum.
