PASCAL (Blaise). — FABRI (Honoré).
Notae in Notas Willelmi Wendrockii ad Ludovici Montalti Litteras... Cologne, Johannes Busaeus, 1659. In-8, soft vellum of the time. First edition of this work stigmatizing the Lettres provinciales, in which the true identity of Louis de Montalte (Blaise Pascal) is revealed for the first time. A great theologian, well versed in the sciences, the Jesuit Honoré Fabri (1607-1688) was a member of the Censorship Commission of the Holy Office; his arguments were used for the condemnation of the Provincial Letters. If the Provinciales are a classic turning point in the history of moral theology, their condemnation is also a remarkable date. The decree of September 6, 1657 marks the peak of the influence in Rome of anti-jansenism, of the Jesuits and of Fr. Honoré Fabri (Jean-Louis Quantin, " Si mes Lettres sont condamnées à Rome... " in Dix-septième siècle, 2014/4, n°265). Manuscript bookplate of the Jesuit College of Rouen at the top of the title, and another mention scratched on the same page. Small marginal wetness on a few leaves.
