FRENCH REVOLUTION. - Collection of revolutionary... - Lot 200 - Giquello
FRENCH REVOLUTION. - Collection of revolutionary contredanses. Paris, c. 1785-1793. Together 87 pieces in 2 volumes in-8, marbled half-calf with corners, smooth spine decorated, red edges (Binding of the time). Unique collection of 87 rare contredanses mainly composed and printed during the French Revolution, put together by an amateur of the time who had them bound in two volumes. These pieces celebrate for the majority of them the political events and the outstanding figures of this time. Their titles are evocative: La Robespierre, La Guillotine, L'Autrichienne, Ronde patriote, Le Chant du coq, La Constitution, Les Droits de l'homme, Le Saut de la Bastille, Le Tambourin de la liberté, Marche marseilloise, L'Arbre de la liberté, etc. The title pieces on the back are marked Vauxa, for Vauxhall, a reference to English entertainment establishments organized around an orchestra pavilion and an open-air or indoor ball. There was a Vauxhall d'Été in Paris, built in 1785: one of the contredanses in the present collection is even titled 8e du Vauxhall d'Été and contains erasures and alterations to the figures by a contemporary hand. Paper restorations, stains and foxing to a few pieces. Hinges and covers of volume I restored.
