History of edible and poisonous mushrooms, in which their distinctive characteristics, their food and economic properties, their harmful effects and the means to guarantee or remedy them are explained. Second edition. Paris, Fortin, 1841. In-4, half tan basane, smooth spine decorated (Modern binding). Atlas complete with 24 beautiful color plates. Copy enriched with two handwritten pages, result of research on mushrooms, dated 1852 and signed (signature illegible). These are mounted at the head. The first one is captioned Orders and tribes of edible and poisonous mushrooms, distinctive characters; the second one, under the title Precautions to be taken to prevent the harmful effects of poisonous mushrooms, is preceded by this introductory statement: Mr. Frédéric Gérard, after numerous experiments on himself and on his four children, claims that it is easy to destroy the poisonous ferments of the most harmful mushrooms, such as the amanite bulbuse, the false oronge... Frédéric Gérard (1806-1857), French naturalist and one of the first thinkers on evolution, researched the toxicity of mushrooms, for which he published in 1852 his Études sur les champignons vénéneux, moyen de les dépouiller de leur principe toxique et de les rendre comestibles. Lower stain on plate 6, remnants of adhesive in the bottom of plate 7, part of the bowl of two plates cut out. Some stains. Transverse tear repaired on plate 15.
