SAINT-AMOUR (Louis Gorin de).
Journal de Mr de Saint Amour, Docteur de Sorbonne, De ce qui s'est fait à Rome dans l'Affaire des Cinq Propositions. S.l., Printed by the care of the said Sieur de Saint Amour [Leiden, Elzevier ?], 1662. 2 parts in a small volume in-folio, granite calf, spine decorated, edges speckled with red (Binding of the time). First edition. The theologian Louis Gorin de Saint-Amour (1619-1687) had defended the philosophers of Port-Royal and had gone to Rome to plead their case to Pope Innocent X. He was expelled from the Sorbonne and his work was condemned to fire in 1664 by a decision of the Council of State. The indication "Imprimé par les soins dudit sieur" could be misleading and give the illusion that Saint-Amour had set up a typographic workshop comparable to the presses of Sully or Richelieu. One can interpret this formula in several ways: first of all the desire to affirm that he assumes the total responsibility of the Jansenist positions which he defends in his book, but also that he financed the printing and that he took part in the edition of his text. The typography is that of Daniel Elzevier and it is known that Saint-Amour maintained close relations with the typographer of Leiden and Amsterdam (Paul Jammes, Imprimeries particulières, n°35). Wet stamp of a religious congregation of Doubs on the title. Manuscript and printed bookplate of Maurice Vernerey, priest of Luhier (Franche-Comté). Smudging at the corner or on the edge of a few quires, some foxing. Crack at one of the spine ends, small chip at the top cover.
