SCALIGER (Jules César).
De Causis linguae latinae libri tredecim. [Geneva], Pierre de Saint-André, 1580. 8 pages, soft vellum with cover (contemporary binding). First of three editions published in Geneva. Originally published in Lyon in 1540, De causis linguae Latinae is an essential link in the history of Latin grammar and more generally in the history of linguistic theories. It is not a Latin grammar in the usual sense of the term, but rather a philosophical reflection on the foundations of the Latin language (see the critical edition published by Droz). A copy in contemporary vellum, annotated at length by an old hand in the margins of the first 100 pages. Bookplate on the title, repeated at the end: D. Martin 1626.
