Commentarius brevis rerum polonicarum a morte Sigismundi Augusti Poloniae Regis, Anno 1572 Mense Julio Knisini mortui. Danzig, Georg Förster, 1647. In-4, red half-chagrin, small number and motto gilt on the tail, combed edges (19th century binding). First edition of this chronicle of Poland, from 1572, the year of the death of King Sigismund II, to 1590. Among the events described in the work are the reign of Henry of Valois, crowned King of Poland in 1573, and the conflicts with the Turks. Nice title engraved on copperplate, unsigned. A Polish writer and diplomat, Jan Dymitr Solikowski (c. 1539-1603) was secretary to King Sigismund II and took part in the Union of Brest (1595-1596), named after the city of Brest in Belarus, which sealed the allegiance to Rome of part of the Orthodox Church in the Ruthenian provinces of the former Polish-Lithuanian republic, mostly located in present-day Belarus and Ukraine. A copy extensively perused by a reader of the time, with numerous underlines in the text and handwritten notes in the margins. A copy bound with the cipher of the Duke of Noailles, accompanied by the family motto.
