VIRGILE.
L'Eneïde de Virgile, prince des poëtes latins. Lyon, Jean de Tournes, 1560. in-4, soft vellum, remains of laces, handwritten title on the spine and label of quotation (Binding of the time). Brun, p. 312. - Cartier, n°467. First complete edition, in the translation of Louis des Masures. It gathers the twelve books of the Aeneid, which the translator had begun publishing in 1547. Elegant printing in italics, the Latin text printed in a sleeve next to the French translation. The title is surrounded by the publisher's very nice "curved arabesque" frame. This magnificent edition is illustrated with 12 large and delightful woodcut vignettes, one at the head of each of the twelve songs: 8 of them appear here for the first time and are in first printing. Born in Tournai, the poet and humanist Louis des Masures (1515-1574) was the secretary of the house of Lorraine, which offered him protection during his youth until his conversion to Protestantism. Repeated wet stamp of a religious congregation on the title. Manuscript bookplates on the title, some crossed out and one covered. Handwritten bookplate also covered at the end. Four interchanged leaves in book E. Small wetness on the edge of several leaves. Vellum soiled and shrunken, with small tears.
