RUSKIN (John)
Sesame and lilies. Treasures of kings, gardens of queens. Paris, Mercure de France, 1906. In-12, midnight blue half-chagrin, smooth spine decorated, cover (Binding of the period). First edition of the French translation, with notes and a preface, by Marcel Proust. Copy on laid paper, numbered at the compositor. An autograph letter of 2 pages from Marcel Proust, undated, is mounted at the head of the volume: The "Récit" is out of my memory. It returns there sometimes, to make me rage, but by flashes I put it, increasingly rare and which will be soon extinguished. As soon as I am better I will send you the "Sesame" which will open my door to you, but until then I will perhaps go to see you because at home the vapor of burnt powder makes the atmosphere unbreathable and you would need a mask as against asphyxiating gases. [I don't think I'll ever return to Cabourg [...]. The second page of the autograph is written on a false title page of the edition of Sesame and the Lilies which is printed on a different paper than the one of the volume.
