Lobi head, Burkina Faso Wood H. 57 cm Provenance... - Lot 5 - Giquello
Lobi head, Burkina Faso Wood H. 57 cm Provenance : - Galerie Ratton-Hourdé, Paris, 2005 Superb Lobi head surmounted by a central crested headdress. The details of the face are treated in a geometrical way: the arch of the eyebrows in strong relief, the eyes in the shape of convex lozenges, the fine and triangular nose, a lippish mouth. The round face rests on a powerful cylindrical neck. This type of sculpture was originally stuck in the floor of sanctuaries and served as a guard. These heads could also be found attached to the top of enclosure walls. See Sotheby's, New York, May 14, 2004, lot 3 for a comparable head from the André Schoeller collection.
