Bete mask, Ivory Coast - Lot 7
Bete mask, Ivory Coast Wood, brass nails H. 45 cm Provenance : - André Schoeller, Paris, 2002 A superb, powerful and expressive example of a Bete or Niabwa mask with all the classical characteristics of the style: a large toothed mouth, a protruding nose, tubular eyes, a large overhanging forehead and four inwardly facing horns whose symbolism has never been fully elucidated. Our example also presents - quite rarely - a large pair of crescent-shaped horns taking root at the top of the skull and giving the mask a particularly graphic line. Old brass nails and remains of pigments dot the face. Very nice old patina.
