Bambara statue, Mali - Lot 10
Bambara statue, Mali Wood H. 55 cm Provenance according to the certificate of the Galerie Ratton-Hourdé : - Believed to have belonged to Pablo Picasso, Paris - Believed to have belonged to Brassaï, Paris - Galerie Ratton-Hourdé, Paris, 1997 The elegant figure presented here has a cocked hairdo, a slender silhouette and a prominent chest. Her schematically treated body is largely adorned with scarification marks. The face is narrow, with studded eyes and a pronounced chin. The provenance of this piece is indicated in the certificate of the Ratton-Hourdé gallery dated February 14, 1997. However, we have no other element at our disposal to attest this history with certainty. Embodying the spirit of an illustrious female ancestor, the Jonyeleni statues offer the most complete expression of the canons of beauty in Bambara country. Placed near the sacred dance area or carried by the Jo initiates, the jonyeleni statues are designed to be looked at and admired, their beauty contributing to the effectiveness of the ceremonies (Colleyn, Bamana. Un art et un savoir-vivre au Mali, 2001, p. 140).
