Kota reliquary figure, Gabon - Lot 14
Kota reliquary figure, Gabon Wood, metal H. 74 cm Provenance : - André Schoeller, Paris, 2006 This Kota reliquary figure is distinguished by the richness of its ornamentation as well as by its advantageous dimensions. The work is covered with multiple lines converging in the center of its face. A major vertical line, decorated with hatching, divides the upper crescent and the forehead. The oval face is covered with a copper plate of different colors. A decoration made of rays animates its surface. A central cross divides this face into four equal parts: the eyes appear on the horizontal band, while the nose, formed by a triangle in relief, and the engraved mouth are aligned on the vertical axis. The lateral projections are decorated with a succession of radiating lines. Two truncated cone-shaped pendants stand out on either side. The borders of the upper crescent and the lateral appendages are decorated with a double line worked in repoussé. The neck is engraved with a series of rhombuses. The lozenge, of good size, receives on the upper arms a copper plating decorated with a succession of hatched triangles. See Sotheby's New York, May 4, 1995, lot 83 for a comparable example from the collection of the artist René Buthaud.
