Baule statuette, Ivory Coast - Lot 19
Baule statuette, Ivory Coast Wood, beads H. 50 cm Provenance : - Jean-Edouard Charpentier, Paris - Sotheby's, New York, May 4, 1995, lot 54 - Lucien Van de Velde, Antwerp - Johann Levy, Paris, 2000 Imposing Baule statuette representing a standing male figure holding a spear, this iconography being particularly rare. The figure is represented in a hieratic position, the body upright, the posture haughty, the left arm resting at the level of the umbilicus, the right hand brandishing a long spear with a twisted handle. Under a finely worked hairstyle, the details of the face are meticulously treated: the arched eyebrows, the half-closed eyes, the blunt nose, and the lippish mouth. A goatee appears at the tip of the chin. Scarifications in relief emerge at the corners of the eyes, at the base of the nose, in the neck, and along the torso. A belt of beads encircles the hips.
