Dan spoon, Ivory Coast - Lot 25
Dan spoon, Ivory Coast Wood H. 56 cm Provenance : - André Schoeller, Paris Wakemia spoons ("feasting spoon") are one of the most striking manifestations of the art of the Dan people of Côte d'Ivoire. An important status symbol, they were given to the most hospitable women in their village or in each part of the city. Brandished during festivals, these spoons were used to divide the food distributed to guests. Our example is adorned with a beautiful carved head on the handle and intricate geometric engravings decorating the grip and back of the spoon. Its superb deep black material and contrasts are a testament to its age and long use.
