Reliquary figure Kota-Shamaye Gabon Wood, metal H. 45 cm Provenance : - René Rasmussen (1912-1979), Paris - Dr Gaston Durville (1997-1999), Paris - Maurice Bonnefoy, New York - Christie's, Amsterdam, December 12, 2000, lot 48 - Galerie Ratton-Hourdé, Paris, 2000 Publication: - Arts d'Afrique Noire, n°5, 1973 - Perrois L., Arts of Gabon, Arts of Black Africa. Les Plastiques du Bassin de l'Ogooue, Arnouville, Arts d'Afrique Noire, 1979, p. 168, cat.162 - Perrois L., Kota, Galerie Ratton-Hourdé, Paris, 2003, p.43 Exhibition : - Paris, Kota, Galerie Ratton-Hourdé, June 2003 This important Kota reliquary figure belongs to the rare and particularly coveted style known as Shamaye. This variant is characterized by a great simplification of the volumes and by its relatively small dimensions. Under an arrowhead hairstyle, the ends of which are partly covered with copper of a different color, the face is oval in shape, marked by two large hemispherical eyes and a straight nose. Thin strips of copper cover the middle area, while the strongly rounded forehead and the lower part of the face are covered with plates. A rich hammered, incised, and embossed decoration runs across the surface of the work. The cylindrical neck is encircled by metal bands, while the upper part of the rhombus is covered with copper plates. This work is also distinguished by its historical pedigree and by its multiple reproductions, notably in Louis Perrois' reference work on the arts of Gabon (1979).
