Ligbi mask, Ivory Coast - Lot 50
Ligbi mask, Ivory Coast Wood H. 56 cm Close to the Senufo, the Ligbi became Muslims a long time ago. However, they have maintained a masked festival, the do, which closes the month of Ramadan. During this festival, the leu or warthog mask opens the ceremony by dancing alone. Our example is perfectly classical: an oval part in front of the face is pierced with two holes to allow the dancer to see. The face is punctuated by four bulbs and a small pair of ears. The second part of the mask consists of a tubular appendage with two horns, which evokes the snout of the animal. Nice patina of use. Provenance : - Loudmer sale, Louis Carré collection and library, Paris, June 27, 1985
