AYMÉ Marcel (1902-1967)
La Vouivre. A fantastic tale based on an old Comtoise legend that reveals the influence of paganism on Christianity in the peasant world. La Vouivre was brought to the screen by Georges Wilson with Lambert Wilson and Suzanne Flon in 1988. Autograph manuscript, (s.l.n.d. 1943), 67 pp. 21x27cm, some erasures and corrections. Missing the first page. The novel was published as a pre-original in La gerbe from July 22 to December 9, 1943, and by Gallimard on November 27, 1943. Most of the corrections, deletions of passages are reported in the Pléiade p.1870. A tale that brings out the fantastic character of the vouivre, from the Celtic tradition. She wears a diadem adorned with a magnificent ruby, whoever wants to take it succumbs to the bites of hundreds of snakes. She appears as an attractive young girl to the hero: Arsène Muselier, a cautious peasant who will weave a friendship with her. He is in love with his neighbor, but the two families are in conflict, and he is moved by Belette, the young maid who is in love with him. The priest wants to try to win back his flock by organizing a procession against the vulture, but the radical and secular mayor is in great trouble. Weasel, learning of Arsene's engagement, decides to commit suicide by stealing the ruby. Arsene rushes to save her from the snakes but they both die. The vulture will not know the mystery of death. Provenance : to the present owner by descent from the author. Bibliography : Marcel Aymé, Œuvres romanesques complètes (Ed. Michel Lécureur), t3, Bibliothèque de la Pléiade n°477. Document with a CBC
