GAUTIER Théophile (1811-1872).
2 L.A.S. and 1 L.S. one of which addressed to the publisher Maurice Dreyfous, Paris, Versailles, February 7, 1865 and [after May 28, 1871] and (s.l.n.d.). 4 pp. small in-8 and in-4. Header of the Moniteur Universel, official newspaper of the French Empire. On February 7, he asks for a service "I beg you to put at my disposal a box for this evening [...]"; Beautiful letter on the Commune "[...] the insurrection is defeated, the Louvre was not reached by the fire, there is fortunately not to regret the loss of any painting, of any statue. The Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo are still living their eternal and radiant life, barbarism could not prevail against them. The paintings of the City Hall, the Delacroix Room, the ceiling of Ingres, the Lehmann Room must have perished with the building and there is no rescue to hope for, the fire has done its share. Besides, one does not enter Paris yet, or at least one needs passes, certificates, papers... How I miss that happy time when in my little house, which was riddled with shells, we used to talk about a nuance of Pierrot's character with all the seriousness that such a subject entails! [...] Then he gives news of his "smala", that is, of Toto (his son), of Lili (Judith Gauthier), of Estelle (his second daughter) and of Zoé (his sister). He himself is in Versailles "[...] and I swear to you that I have had enough of the rue des Réservoirs, a false boulevard of Ghent, no less populated with imbeciles than with the real thing [...] besides, they are the same [...] I am more or less sure that I am neither crazy, nor stupid, nor enraged, but it is all the more painful to live in the middle of people who seem to have lost their compass and only say insanities [...]". GAUTIER Théophile (1811-1872) Autograph letter signed to "My dear Jean-Baptiste Porcher" (s.l.n.d) 1 p. in-8. Joined a drawing representing him.
