HUGO Victor (1802-1885).
L.A.S. Hauteville House, November 12 [1865]. 2 pp. in-12 on blue paper evoking a criticism of his work "Chansons des Rues et des Bois", he indicates "The criticism of poets is the great criticism. You prove it every day, my noble and dear fellow-member and you have just given a brilliant demonstration of it by speaking about the Chansons des Rues et des Bois. It is the very philosophy of art that you have developed in this page so strong and so full? You have said with the simplicity of a deep connoisseur a lot of new things". This letter is framed with the three documents described below. Program for the centenary of Victor Hugo's birth, printed on crepe de Chine paper and enhanced with red gouache; on the back, LANGLOIS-BERTHELOT MONTGUERRE Jean-Marc [writer and diplomat], L.D.S. with some handwritten corrections to André Maurois (s.l.n.d. [October 3, 1952]). 2 pp. in-folio, pasted on a cardboard; MAUROIS André C.A.V.S. with 3 autograph lines, (s.l.n.d.). 1 p. in-16. This astonishing frame puts in scene the letter of Victor Hugo and the research of Jean-Marc Langlois-Berthelot. In his long presentation, he comes back on the identity of the addressee of this famous letter. His reasoning is punctuated with numerous quotations, including those of the letters of "Nov. 12", October 18, November 5, November 9. He concludes by indicating "the letter of November 12, 1865, communicated in 1950 by Mr. Matarasso, bookseller, and today in my possession, is addressed to the poet Louis Ulbach, and not to Auguste Villemot". In answer André Maurois announces "I will point out this detail to the Hugoliens of the National Library". A letter of Anatole de LA FORGE to Victor Hugo is enclosed, Paris, March 10, 1879. 1 p. in-8. Heading of the ministry of the interior, envelope enclosed. He thanks Hugo for an invitation transmitted by "Madame Drouet".
