HUGO Victor (1802-1885).
L.A.S. to the Earl of Alton-Shée, Hauteville House, 2 May 1867. 1 p. in-8 on blue paper. Autograph inscription, slight wetness in the upper left corner (unpublished). Very beautiful text of Hugo evoking his political engagement for the United States of Europe, the writer addresses the high esteem that he feels for his former colleague of the House of Peers "[...] You are a noble character at the same time as a proud and charming spirit. In excellent and strong pages written by you on the House of Peers, I find five lines on me. They have the conciseness and the relief of a medal. To be worthy of this portrait would be my glory [...]. One day perhaps, in the parliament of the United States of Europe, we will take up our serious and sweet talks of the House of Paris. Let us wait, my noble colleague [...]". Count Edmond d'Alton-Shee (1810-1874), was a long time friend of Victor Hugo, peer of France like him and sharing the same democratic fights.
