MARGUERITE DE NAVARRE.
♦ L'Heptameron des nouvelles. Paris, Pour Vincent Sertenas, 1559. In-4, dark blue morocco, gilt monogram in the corners, spine decorated with the same monogram, red morocco lining, interior lace and small filigree finial, edges gilt on marble (Trautz-Bauzonnet). Second edition, the first under this definitive title, of the unfinished short stories of Marguerite d'Angouleme, queen of Navarre (1492-1549). Conceived on the model of the Decameron of Boccaccio, the work is the most famous of the collections of this kind in French. This edition, which was shared between three Parisian booksellers, contains all 72 short stories composed by the princess. A fine copy, with good margins, in a lined morocco binding by Trautz-Bauzonnet with the monogram of Marguerite de Navarre. Small crack in the margin of the title and restoration to the two corners. Paper thinning on the last leaf.
