VORAGINE (Jacques de). ♦ The Golden Legend in French. S.l.n.d. [at colophon] : Lyon, Jean de Vingle, 20 July 1497. Gothic folio, red morocco, quadruple cold fillet, wide cold border in the center of the boards with gilt fleuron at the corners, spine decorated with a large repeated gilt fleuron, interior lace, gilt edges on marble (Trautz-Bauzonnet). GW, 14071. - C, 6495. - Baudrier, t. XII, p. 201. - Bechtel, J-31. An incunabula edition of great rarity, of which only one copy is listed in public collections, preserved in France at the BnF. No copy is listed in American institutions. It is illustrated with a remarkable full-page woodcut on the reverse of the title, representing the heavenly court with God and the saints of Paradise, and more than 150 small and medium-sized woodcuts. The title, printed on two lines, begins with a beautiful xylographic initial L, reproduced by Claudin, t. IV, p. 230. According to the bibliographer, the woodcuts were cut in Parisian workshops and the bastard letters were lent by Jean du Pré to his colleague Jean de Vingle. Printing on two columns, with 43 lines. The Golden Legend, composed in Latin in the second half of the 13th century, is the main text written by Jacques de Voragine (circa 1230-1298), a Dominican preacher born in Varazze in Liguria, archbishop of Genoa and contemporary of Saint Thomas Aquinas. It is presented as a manual of religious culture intended to strengthen the faith and to fight against heresy. Based on authentic sources and in the order of the liturgical calendar, the author recounts the lives of numerous Christian saints and martyrs since the arrival of the Lombards in Italy in the sixth century. His book, read in all the monasteries and translated into several languages, constitutes a history of almost all the Christian West. Pleasant binding by Trautz-Bauzonnet with Renaissance style decoration. Small brown stain on the extreme edge of the lower margin on about ten leaves. Small flecks of black ink on the first board.
