MONTESQUIEU. - Lot 81
MONTESQUIEU. Lettres persanes. Paris, Pour les bibliophiles du Palais, 1926. In-4, lemon morocco, covers framed with an emerald green listel and decorated with two large oriental style cartouches mosaicked in cream morocco and bordered with an emerald green listel, the two motifs facing each other and spaced from each other by a succession of vertical gilt fillets, smooth spine decorated in the same taste, the title stamped in gilt letters on a central piece of cream morocco, inner frame of lemon morocco decorated with a triple gilt fillet, lining and endpapers of almond green faille, double marbled paper endpapers, gilt edges, cover and spine, half morocco folder with band and case (G. Cretté successor of Marius Michel). Portrait of Montesquieu on the frontispiece and numerous ornaments (lettering, headbands and endpapers) drawn and woodcut by Louis Jou. Edition at 200 numbered copies on BFK de Rives. Copy enriched with various pieces: - A trial proof of the portrait. - A rejected proof of the portrait. - Another proof of the portrait. - An illustrated menu and the separate proof of the engraving which decorates it. - 4 plates offering a suite of ornaments. - The model of pages 1-2 and 7-8 mounted on first proof texts. Very nice binding by Cretté, inspired by the Persian decoration. It is quoted by Marcel Garrigou and reproduced in his book dedicated to the bookbinder Georges Cretté (n°381, pl. CVIII). Let us note that the binding, being then known only by a black archive photograph, Marcel Garrigou could not prejudge its color, nor even the edition it covered.
