RODENBACH (Georges) - Lot 85
RODENBACH (Georges) The Virgins. - Les Tombeaux. Paris, Chamerot et Renouard, 1895. 2 volumes in-8, two-tone soft bindings, khaki and pink calf for Les Vierges and khaki and black calf for Les Tombeaux, titles in white and gold oeser on the boards, title in Chinese style on the spine, lining and endpapers of grey-green and pink nubuck, covers, box in two parts of calf of various colors (pink, khaki and black) sparing two compartiments for the volumes, case (Renaud Vernier 1992) First editions. These two opposite and complementary works were commissioned by Siegfried Bing (1838-1905) to celebrate the opening in December 1895 in Paris of his gallery L'Art Nouveau. The merchant called upon two painters close to the Nabis for his illustrations: the Hungarian Jozsef Rippl-Ronaï, who illustrated Les Vierges with 4 delightful color lithographs, and the Scotsman James Pitcairn-Knowles, who adorned Les Tombeaux with 3 black woods. This double artistic enterprise was evoked in a letter by Rippl-Ronaï: I am currently working on the edition, or more exactly on the elaboration of a small book. My Scottish friend is working on his. The publisher is spending, or rather risking, two hundred francs on the project. [...] My drawings are in colors and are reproduced by a lithographic process. Those of my Scottish friend are engraved in wood. These are sad, mine very cheerful; he is haunted by death, I exalt the joy of living; mine represent summer, his winter; my book is clarity, youth, the sun shining, the golden nature [...]. Superb copies, impeccably bound by Renaud Vernier, in a clever slipcase, the whole served by his admirable technical mastery.
