Rare pewter and lead alloy beaker decorated with a frieze de - Lot 46
Rare pewter and lead alloy beaker decorated with a frieze depicting jousting knights on horseback separated by a large piquet with banners and shields; molded rim and base with rhombus frieze on point; gadrooned base. circa 1500 H. 7.3 - Maximum diameter: 7.3 cm (small missing edge, traces of tin plating, limestone deposits, slight deformation) Medieval pewter tableware is extremely rare, having disappeared over the centuries due to the fragility and low value of the material. Only one other goblet seems to be related to it: preserved at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, it is decorated with a frieze with an inscription in Gothic letters, surmounted by animals and plants with a scroll course at the base, all on a squared background (inv. 30.131, fig.). It is given as French, 15th century.
