Bronze plaque with brown patina depicting the Nativity to the Shepherds. The Infant Jesus rests in the foreground on an upturned capital before a woman in an attitude of adoration; on the right, the Virgin kneels and Saint Joseph holds the donkey by a rein; on the left, a group of five shepherds; classical architectural background with semicircular arch, colonnade and temple. Inscription - PARM - INVENT - on entablature and date 1561 on capital. High-quality cast iron. Northern Italy, Emilia, 16th century H. 19.8 - L. 14.8 cm This plaque, whose authorship is disputed, is known in numerous examples. Some in gilded bronze are enriched with silver inlays, such as the one in the Museo civico Amedeo Lia in La Spezia (inv.Bp61) or in the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore (inv.54.229). The print shown here is of high quality, with a particularly fine patina.
