Saint Agnes in carved, polychromed and gilded oak, rough bac - Lot 56
Saint Agnes in carved, polychromed and gilded oak, rough back. Standing with a long barrel, the young Roman martyr holds a spindle in her right hand, her other hand grasping a thread between two fingers; she is dressed in a shirt with gathered collar, a long dress belted and blousante at the waist and a cloak with a flap over her left leg; head with long, straight nose and sharp chin, with hair held back by a small headdress, fastened at the temples by gold-plated clasps; naturalistic terrace on which stood three lambs, two of which have disappeared. Champagne, circa 1530/40 H. 105 cm (original polychromy partly restored, some missing) A dendrochronological dating, which will be communicated to the purchaser, was carried out on this sculpture by a Besançon laboratory in December 1995. It concluded that "the wood may have been used from 1536 onwards".
