Rare small carved oak chest by a master carpenter, probably - Lot 62
Rare small carved oak chest by a master carpenter, probably intended as a gift for his wife. Dovetailed, it is adorned on all sides with flat carved decoration on a vermiculated background: in medallions, the heads of the man and woman on the front, and the three children on each side and on the back; recessed lid with wrought-iron handle, framed by diamond-point and rosette motifs in a frieze of squares; central panel features a shield furnished with carpentry tools, including compasses, a square, a plane, a gouge, a trusquin and a mallet; it rests on a skirt carved with scrolls and shells. The interior is fitted with an eclipette; spring lock, key and hinges in wrought and engraved iron. North Germany, late 16th century H. 28 - W. 41.5 - D. 30 cm (very slight wear) By virtue of its originality, proportions, rich ornamentation and refined craftsmanship, this small chest appears to be a piece of furniture intended for domestic use, probably offered to the wife shown here accompanied by her children. The master carpenter took particular care in its manufacture, even in the choice of the ironwork, thus expressing the attention he paid to his family.
