Polychrome painted enamel plate, translucent enamels on pebb - Lot 70
Polychrome painted enamel plate, translucent enamels on pebbles and gold highlights, depicting the Coronation of Thorns, with salmon-colored counter-enamel. Christ, reed in hand, is seated at the center of the composition; he is surrounded by four executioners, including a soldier, one with a stick placing the crown of thorns, another facing him, sticking out his tongue and making the obscene gesture of the fig; on either side, seven different spectators watch the scene; colonnade and arched doorway in the background. Limoges, attributed to Jean de Court dit Maître IC, circa 1580-1600 H. 11 - L. 21 cm In a velvet frame with molded brass rods (some old restorations) The dense composition, colors and facial features are characteristic of Jean de Court's work. The turquoise crown of intertwined thorns is identical to that found on the Crucifixion on a plate monogrammed IC (Paris sale, Christie's, May 18, 2022, lot 145, fig.a). The treatment of faces, beards, arms and legs is also similar on several works signed by this refined painter, as can be seen on a plate from the former Jules Soulages collection, held at the Victoria & Albert Museum (inv. 8424-1863, detail fig.b) or on a dish from the Hôtel Lambert collection (Paris sale, Sotheby's, October 12, 2022, lot 139, detail fig.c).
