Pair of enamel plaques painted in grisaille with gold and re - Lot 73
Pair of enamel plaques painted in grisaille with gold and red highlights, depicting Christ aux Outrages and the Virgin of Sorrows in medallions, spandrels furnished with fine foliage, salmon-colored counter-enamels. Christ looking up to heaven, a reed between his hands bound in front of him; Mary, turned three-quarters to the left, hands clasped. Inscriptions ECCE HOMO and MATER DOLOROSA on the lower part; HPoncet signature surmounted by a fleur-de-lys on the back of the Ecce Homo; fixing holes in the corners. Limoges, Hélie Poncet (circa 1630 - 1668), 17th century H. 14.4 and 14.5 cm - L. 10.9 and 10.8 cm (slightly missing) Works consulted - L. Rodriguez Peinado, "H. Poncet, esmaltador de Limoges" in Anales de Historia del Arte, 1, January 1989; M. Beyssi-Cassan, Le métier d'émailleur à Limoges XVIe-XVIIe siècle, Limoges, 2006. The enameller Hélie Poncet was the son of Philippe, a painter and merchant in Limoges; he was not domiciled in the Faubourg Magnine like his Laudin colleagues, but near the church of Saint-Michel-des-Lions, an indication that sometimes accompanies his signature. A number of signed enamels by this artist can be found in various public collections, all of them religious: two depicting St. Mary Magdalene and the Repentance of St. Peter at the Hospice de Nolay (Côte d'or), two others at the National Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid depicting the Evangelists Matthew and Luke, and two more, the Ecce Homo and St. Leonard at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Limoges (inv.059 and 060).
