Small table cabinet in ebony veneer over an oak core, decora - Lot 81
Small table cabinet in ebony veneer over an oak core, decorated with engraved silver-leaf panels, resting on molded legs. It opens with a flap onto three drawers and a lid onto a top box; the lid has a recess containing a hiding place accessible via a sliding panel that can be opened by unscrewing two threaded rods. Decorated on all sides with molded panels and turned balusters at the four corners; inner front with twin arches in the center opening onto mirrors and drawers adorned with finely silver-engraved, asymmetrical and scrolled foliage, animated with birds on the frieze and lower drawer; reverse of the lid with mirror framed by silver-engraved panels, one depicting Rebecca giving Abraham's servant a drink after an engraving by Hans Janssen of 1656 (fig.) and the other depicting the Sacrifice of Abraham, cartouches below with the inscription Genesis; silver keyhole with symmetrical openwork scrolls. Antwerp, second half of the 17th century H. 21 - W. 25.9 - D. 17.6 cm (slight accidents and missing parts, flap has lost its interior decorative plate, later key) Book consulted - Exposition Bruxelles 1989, Meubles d'apparat des Pays-Bas méridionaux, Générale de Banque, R. Fabri, cat.16, p 144-149. The Rockoxhuis-Kredietbank Museum in Antwerp preserves a very similar cabinet made in the same workshop; its rich decoration is also based on the story of Abraham, and borrows some of its subjects from Janssen's engravings.
