Virgin and Child - Lot 82
Virgin and Child Oil on copper Mexico, 17th century H. 7.6 - L. 5.9 cm In a metal frame with twisted ribbon (very small missing parts) Book consulted : - F. Ferrer-Joly (ed.), Plumes - Visions de l'Amérique précolombienne, Paris-Auch, 2016, p. 100-105. The iconography of this finely executed copper painting is particularly interesting, as it shows the Child held in Mary's arms wrapped in a coat of multicolored feathers. It thus echoes certain festive costumes worn by the natives in the 17th century, as shown in an engraving by the Andean chronicler Guaman Poma de Ayala in his most famous work, completed in 1615 (fig.). This representation is also remarkable for the many details of the clothing worn by this South American Madonna, whose head is encircled by a high golden crown, whose face is surrounded by four rows of pearls, whose veil is edged with lace festoons, who is adorned with a large round pendant made of precious stones, pearls and gold, and who is richly ringed.
