Ivory plaque carved in bas-relief and openwork depicting the - Lot 96
Ivory plaque carved in bas-relief and openwork depicting the Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew. The saintly Apostle is tied by the wrists to a tree trunk, both arms raised; he raises an imploring gaze to heaven while his legs bend under his slumped body; on the right, the executioner, mounted on a ladder and knife between his teeth, removes his skin by leaning on one of his arms. Austria, Vienna, attributed to the Master of the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, circa 1660 H. 14 - L. 9 cm Framed and on a green velvet background. (very slight accidents) Several characteristics link this fine ivory bas-relief to the work of the anonymous sculptor known as the Master of the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, in reference to the work in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, dated 1655 (inv. Kunstkammer, 3654, fig.). In addition to the high quality of execution, there are similarities in the placement of the legs, in the treatment of the tree stump and in the executioner's clothing details, with his turban and short boots. There is a common "savagery" to the subjects interpreted by this remarkable ivory-maker, which lies here in the fierce expression of the executioner, knife between his teeth, forcefully removing the skin of the victim. This object has a CITES certificate issued on 07/03/2023.
