Saint Barthélémy in fruitwood carved in the round. The marty - Lot 97
Saint Barthélémy in fruitwood carved in the round. The martyred saint, whose right arm has begun to be flayed, is tied to a tree against which he is leaning; his body sags from exhaustion, his torso in front and his legs bent in profile, his knees touching the mound; carefully crafted head with wavy hair sweeping back, eyes with heavy eyelids, prominent cheekbones, short, neatly curled beard. Northern Germany, 17th century H. 22 cm (small missing fingers on the right hand) Book consulted : - Exhibition Frankfurt am Main 1982, Dürers Verwandlung in der Skulptur zwischen Renaissance und Barock, Museum of Sculpture, cat.167, p.263 and 264. The Württemberg State Museum in Stuttgart holds an identical, slightly larger statuette by the same sculptor (inv. I.N. 1964-24, fig.). The catalog entry concludes that this "pictorial work impresses with the expressive zigzagging of the contours and the detailed, chiselled elaboration of the head and hair".
