The Dutch East India Company, Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC, was a grouping of various shipping companies operating in the Indian Ocean. This grouping was created in 1602 by the Republic of the Seven United Provinces of the Netherlands, and was dissolved in 1799, after the transformation of the United Provinces into the Dutch Republic. Competing with the Portuguese presence in the Indian peninsula since the 16th century, it developed a very active trade over two centuries, making it the leading maritime power in this part of the world.
