Oval-shaped pendant with commesso in semi-precious stones de - Lot 120
Oval-shaped pendant with commesso in semi-precious stones depicting an antique-style woman's bust in straight profile, set in gold with a mobile ring. The cameo features a sardony base, a two-layered agate head with a pinkish-flesh face and orange-brown hair, and a malachite bust. Beautiful workmanship. Germany, circa 1700 Cameo, H. 2.7 - L. 2.3 cm With setting, H. 3.4 cm (later ring of the setting) This type of cameo, composed of an assemblage of several semi-precious hard stones, seems to be a specificity of glyptic art at the Hessian court towards the end of the 17th century. The Royal Collections of England have preserved a medallion, very similar in size, depicting a Turk's bust on a rock crystal background set on a green leaf. The face and beard are carved in two-layered agate, the turban in onyx and the mantle in jasper (inv. RCIN 65241, fig.).
